My younger sister bought a XBox 360 Elite as a Christmas present for herself, but the family to share; still ultimately her own gift.
I jumped on for a little bit to give it a try and my current opinion is that though it has nice games, it really isn't worth it. I personally think the extra cost on the Playstation 3 is much more worth while.
Setting up is like on the Wii, where you create your own avatar to use. The avatar doesn't do much, it's only for looks, until you jump online, but still very much for looks.
There's an introduction video and much like the Playstation 3's, it gives you a quick run through the features and functions of the XBox 360. It was fine and all, but when they used the theme song of Little Big Planet for the background music, well, out the window goes for any remaining proof that Microsoft and XBox is very original; oh the irony.
Another case of point? Natal is a copy of Playstation 2 Eye but with vast improvements with more uses because of the new design of the menu interface. I like the idea of having a controller used, along with motion sensing, because it gives you more control.
I haven't come across the Red Ring of Death yet, but I was probably close to it. Apparently I need to switch off the XBox from the power outlet too? Though true, it's a good thing to do when not using your device, even for the Playstation 3, but my sister woke up to use it and found that the XBox had become quite hot, just because the power was still on, even though the console itself was off.
My Playstation 3 has not given me any problems at all what-so-ever other than a few crashes, which I contribute to old age; obviously the same will come across tot he XBox also, so this really isn't an issue, it's having to remember to turn off the power outlet and/or unplugging the power completely.
What's going to become annoying though is having to lug the console and power into my room, pull my TV out to plug in the XBox 360, and update it from there since that's where the internet modem is; that's right, no Wi-Fi on the XBox 360 Elite. My sister having purchase some games she wanted to play can't at the moment as the console needs to be updated, and we are currently capped until New Year, before our speeds are restored to normal. But still having to lug the thing into my room is a hassle; it's not the weight, but the inconvenience.
Another problem is that the wireless controllers run on 2xAA batteries. I guess one advantage is always being able to replace with a fresh battery, where as rechargables will eventually die out and hold less charge. But the flaw is that you will be replacing them quite a bit, with the costs racking up easily in the long run. Also, I don't know how long 2xAA batteries will last with all the rumbling happening either. Worst part is, the only way to access the recharging capabilities of the controller is to purchase a separate recharging kit.
Also, no HD-DVD support out of the box? That's more money down the drain I guess if you like watching movies in HD like I do. I currently use Blu-Ray, which is standard in the Playstation 3; loving it.
Again, I will say, there are definitely great titles on the XBox 360 Elite, but if you can live without them as the Playstation 3 also has amazing titles to keep you busy, then the XBox just really isn't worth the hassle and lack of functionality, nor the gimmick.
I was going to buy a Nintendo Wii for the family in actuality, because its more casual and has a lot of multiplayer party, and favourites, which I can enjoy with my family, or for them to have fun with; specifically my parents.
I know, it's a rant here, but it's an opinion, and makes me happy I purchase a Playstation 3 instead as games isn't the big deal for me, it's the long run of functionality; 10 year cycle, here we come!
